PaperlessKitchen.com was founded to help individuals, households, businesses and organizations adopt greener lifestyles and philosophies by offering alternatives to kitchen paper products. By choosing reusable and sustainable products, you help protect acres of forests, reduce the waste that ends up in landfills and reduce your overall environmental footprint.

As an incentive to get you started, every week for the next few weeks, the fine folks at PaperlessKitchen.com will be giving away 10 of their SKOY cloths!

SKOY biodegradable cloths are an absorbent, eco-friendly alternative to cleaning with paper towels. Rather than being formed from wood pulp that is sourced from the products of deforestation, the natural cleaning cloth fibers used in the production of SKOY products are sourced from natural cotton and cellulose pulp. These paper towel alternatives are free of chlorine and contain only water-based dyes, which are friendlier to the environment than chemical or oil-based colorants.

Just one SKOY cloth can be used enough times to be equivalent to 15 rolls of paper towels, so not only does this natural cleaning cloth protect the planet, but it also saves you money, making it a smart option among paper towel alternatives. SKOY cloths can be easily sterilized in the microwave or washed in the washing machine or dishwasher. When they finally become worn out, SKOY biodegradable cloths can be composted or thrown away, as they will break down quickly, typically within just five weeks following disposal.

Enter for your chance to win your very own SKOY cloths, here’s how:

In addition to using your new SKOY cloths, tell us in a comment here other ways you intend to “green” up your kitchen or bathroom cleaning.

Didn’t get your voice heard the first time around? You’re in luck! We’ve relaunched this giveaway; it will be running until January 31st. Read on for details.

Calling all men! Here is a fantastic new item from Eternal Creation that I have just received fresh from India. Not only is this fabric 100% cotton, like all Eternal Creation clothing, it is Fair Trade. This particular shirt is slim fit and a wonderful mix of blue, green, and brown all tossed together in a vibrant paisley pattern.

At first I noted that the fabric wasn’t extremely soft for 100% cotton, but with a quick wash and dry it turned into a wonderfully soft material. Out of the dryer it had virtually no wrinkles, making it a great on the go option. And the price point was a hit at only $50! Want to win a $50 gift card toward Eternal Creation? Keep reading. This super trendy shirt can be worn on a weekend getaway with loved ones or a night out with the boys.

You might say: who is Eternal Creation? This is a sustainable company born in Dharamsala, in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. Seventy Tibetan, Nepalese and Indian tailors design and produce clothing in the Himalayan Tailoring Center. Providing the largest employment business in the area, the line has now grown from focusing mostly on woman’s sleepwear and accessories to a much larger company that now sells men’s and children’s wear.

Designer Frances Carrington started this company with a dream and a $5,000 loan that she had received from her father after graduating college. On a volunteer trip to India, Frances became head of the tailoring department at the Norbulingka Institute in Dharamsala and the rest was history. She wanted to stay and use her skills to benefit the local community. Though they started out with very little staff, Eternal Creation is dedicated to growing their workshops rather than outsourcing orders. You know your purchase will assist in improving the lives of recently arrived political refugees by providing jobs, training, health care, and accommodations.

Image courtesy of Liu Wen Cheng (Flickr)

Over the summer, I read a thought-provoking piece in the Guardian. It was about the ways in which luxury and sustainability don’t necessarily need to be at odds. Target examples, of course, were upscale vendors such as Vivienne Westwood and PPR (owner of several luxury brands, among them Gucci). But this paragraph sparked my imagination.

[S]top and think: what is luxury? Traditionally, luxury may be defined as an inessential, desirable item that is expensive or difficult to obtain; nowadays, we could fit within that category things such as time, copper, cod…

That notion of judicious use of limited resources struck a chord with me. I started wondering what would happen if I turned the equation on its head, and instead started to see all purchasing I did as necessarily both sustainable and luxurious. So often, consumption is driven by a vicious cycle of living beyond our means to purchase things we can’t afford. But the alternatives to conspicuous consumption are often about an ascetic vision of doing without for the virtue of all. Somewhere on the spectrum between full mink coats and sackcloth and ashes, there had to be a happy medium.

Luxurious, sustainable clean!

My secret is to treat every purchase like a true splurge, a reward on every level: in and of itself, to my lifestyle, and to my budget. Necessities can be dressed up until they shine. And manufacturers of green products have gotten on the bandwagon at last, designing aggressively to ensure that often the most enticing option is also the friendliest to the earth.

Oral hygiene, for example, is one of the most boring daily obligations we have. But ever since I found an affordable, satisfyingly weighty, ergonomic toothbrush made from recycled U.S. Treasury bills* and a gorgeous antique creamer at Goodwill to store it in, brushing my teeth makes me smile every time I scrub up.

*Toothbrush ($6) + creamer ($1) + eco-toothpaste ($3): $10. Injecting beauty into the mundane – not to mention cracking myself up at the fact that my dental care routine is literally “so money,” on the other hand: priceless.

This pattern of behavior started to seep into every level of my decision making. When I find cheap avocados at the farmer’s market, I’m not just enthused about saving money. Instead I feel quietly glad to be able to nourish both my tummy and my wallet. And when faced with the option to buy several cheap pairs of shoes or one quality set of vintage cowboy boots, I didn’t even think twice. Skimping on experience to save money started to feel like cheapening the intrinsic value of things – and cheating myself. So conversely, buying high quality in small doses started to make everything, from my sturdy and stylish bike to my excellent third-hand kitchenware, feel like a reward.

December’s retail frenzy places a lot of focus on both bargain hunting and excessive overall spending – the epitome of being pennywise but pound foolish. This holiday season, I’ll be going against the grain: finding small, luxurious gifts (often from small businesses or local vendors) and then paying what they’re worth. After all: imbuing my life and those of my loved ones with greater value… that’s a luxury I can always afford.

Dear Shoeist (did I mention there is a giveaway at the end of this article? keep reading),

Imelda R. Marcos (a Filipina Politician known as the Iron Butterfly) is revered for her extravagant shoe collection: it numbers 2700 pairs.

A recent poll of 1,009 women ages 18 and older, published by Consumer Reports and conducted by ShopSmart Magazine revealed that women in the USA own an average of 17 pairs of shoes but wear only three pairs regularly.

Shoes glorious shoes! We can always rely on fulfilling the retail therapy void when shopping for shoes. Why? Because post-shoe consumption we find ourselves bragging about our finds to our girlfriends instead of the post clothing internal dialogue “why did I just buy that?” Ladies, shoes are your forgiving friends.

They always fit in times of weight fluctuation, you can rely on them for mileage for up to 20+ years (if you really take care of a good pair of quality made shoes), they can make or break any outfit while giving you comfort, style, or an alter ego, you can get one in every color, and you can feel like a million sparkly bucks with that new pair (even with the re-run outfits).

With women spending on average of $49 a pair and purchasing on average 3 new pairs a year, here is your eco-shoe crib sheet just in time for Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping. Give the gift of shoes that are eco-conscious with sole to someone in your life or gift yourself.

Nestled within my picks are three in-depth product reviews and one stellar giveaway.

Shop with Sole,

Jerah

Freewaters Bossa Nova Flip Flops

A Flip Flop (product review) that gives clean water by Freewaters. A company with a dual mission, to design the best sandals ever seen and to help find solutions to the global drinking water pandemic, started by two industrial designers and long time friends who wear sandals 24-7, and designed wetsuits and snowboards for 10 years. They bring you their patent pending fitperfect standard for women and men with a firm density foam in the heel & arch for support plus a soft density foam in the forefoot for a soft rebound when you step.

These flip flops go further with water friendly performance leather (wow), vegan friendly footbed and solvent free. My favorite part? The toe strap (that sits in between your toes and gives most women that red blister rub) is made of a super soft double thick matching ribbon that just feels like they are your already favorite worn in sandal. In a wonderful array of beach chic styles and price points ($20-$80), these are sandals that act like shoes. I give them a powerhouse rating. Living in a warm climate like myself, sandals are critical to our daily lives. I walked and walked and walked in my camel colored Bossa Novas for weeks with neither blister nor arch pain from those flat floppy sandals.

Freewaters Mission

Knowing that my one pair provides clean drinking water for one individual for one entire year through projectfreewaters.org, the grassroots organization initiating clean water projects, makes me flip for this company.

HOMIE House Shoes by Freewaters

House Shoes (product review) by Freewaters is shipped to you in a biodegradable cornstarch bag, which I reuse as travel gear. Grab their flip-flops and a very lovely pair of ergonomic house shoes, and jet. At a reasonable price point of ($45), in a variety of fun colors, I tested out some holiday red cheer house shoes known as Homie just in time for some cooler weather. I have to say wearing a house shoe cuts down considerably on the dirtiness of your floors. It also is a nice transition from my street shoe that touched just about everything to hanging out in my socks at home.

With a natural felted wool shell that wicks away moisture, a removable and washable liner with a snap at the heel to keep the liner in place (these guys are thinking). Insulated with sleeping bag construction (reminds me of camping), a lightweight liner that keep my feet from the slipper sweats, a bottom sole made with felted wool (nice on hardwood floors) and rubber dots that provide traction for slippage, but I must say, also provide for squeak (hoping that can be eliminated). Overall, this house shoe is super lightweight and provides free water to people all over the African Continent. Check out their website for a Google Earth look at where they are digging wells. “In 2025 it is predicted that 1,88,000,000 people will live where fresh water is scarce.” Now that’s a shoe I am willing to wear around the house.

Performance Shoe (my pick) by Vivobarefoot formerly known as Terra Plana based out of the UK is all about the “barefoot movement.” Reader, Kara Rane, this answer is for you. Kara asked me if it is possible to find an eco-athletic shoe that looks cool? My answer is, “yes, but it is a tough find.” Doing a little hunting for you, I kept coming back to a brand I admire for their durability, style, and barefoot education. Now that Terra Plana (my favorite place for eco heels no longer) is resting under their newly focused Vivobarefoot campaign (which is awesome), it looks like Vivobarefoot is your one place to shop for a performance shoe while learning a lot about your feet.

Before you pick an athletic shoe, we all may need some re-education on how to use our feet as the brilliant biomechanical appendages they are meant to be. Vivobarefoot teaches us that “70% of your brain’s information for movement comes from the nerves on the soles of your feet. The more you can feel the ground, the greater your body’s understanding of its surroundings and natural movement.”

Click under their Community tab to find many articles + videos on how to run skillfully. Watch this video on the Vivobarefoot Neo Trail Shoe for off-the road trail performance and you will see what I mean. Vivobarefoot has you covered from a best selling minimalist work shoe for adults as well as why barefoot is best for kids. For performance shoes choose from off the road, multi-terrain, on road, or amphibious. All of their footwear is produced sustainably using recycled and locally sourced materials, and factories that they personally monitor. However this company reshapes itself, I am a huge fan.

My Wish List

Winter Boots from one of three 100% vegan shoe companies, OlsenHaus, Novacas and Neuarura, all with a design sense to match anything seen in Vogue Magazine. Prices vary from ($40’s to $300). Or a boot made from coconuts at Po-Zu (meaning “pause and reflect” in Japanese).

Affordable Flats. If you love the mall, dip into Payless and pick up a pair of eco shoes by Zoe and Zac, their affordable ($20-$40) fresh green line. Find something flat and fabulously walkable at Toms within the ($50) range (for every one pair of shoes you buy Tom’s gives a pair to a child in need). If you are still at a loss, check out the variety over at Simple Shoes, a company that breaks down an eco-shoe well.

Walkable Heels by El Naturalista because I love, luv color! Handcrafted in Spain and Morocco using leather crafting techniques specific to the region, natural dyes, cork, jute, wood, and water based glues, pick your language and browse at prices ranging from $100-$300). Or, check out Naya and read all about them from my last article.

Creative Shoes. For a social change shoe experience Alive Shoes is a must see fusing both eco sneakers with innovative art installations from around the world.

Style Conscious (wish I could afford you) Shoes by super lovely Cri de Coeur, ethical contemporary shoes for the fashionista at heart. And the European based Coclico which means poppy flower in French.
Do you like to get presents? What would you say about a monthly present box filled with organic sustainable goods from socially responsible companies that support conscious healthy living?

The idea sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Conscious Box, the company who brought this idea to life, is launching this month.

Conscious Box is a monthly subscription service whose goal is to introduce their customers to a range of companies that support a sustainable, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle while minimizing their negative impact on the planet. “Healthy planet with healthy people” is one of the company’s mottos.

Discovery is another value that Conscious Box regards highly. Monthly boxes are focused on a different theme each month – November was the month of gratitude. The contents of the box strive to reflect the theme in the form of practical daily living necessities. You know that you’ll get a range of high quality products from green, honest businesses – but every month will be a surprise. CB wants you to feel like your birthday is every month.

Interior shot

The box’s packaging helps to create a celebration experience. My recycled box came with green wrapping paper and a pretty tie.

This month, the box included everything from vegan beauty products to organic energy boosters – a total of 12 little presents. Every item reflects something that we should be grateful for: Honest Tea Kid’s drink (honesty), Kind Bar (kindness), Glee Gum (happiness), Pharmacopia lotion and body wash, 100% Pure lotion and body wash (our bodies), Mary’s Gone Crackers cookie, Funky Monkey fruit snack (fun), Cocoa Well supplement sample (energy), and Living Nutz baggy (creativity) were carefully arranged inside the box. All this for a total of $19/month or $108/6 months which includes shipping and handling. The company’s website notes that the total value of the samples is around $30, which makes it a pretty good deal.

Besides striving to create a small celebration in people’s lives, CB was launched with a mission to educate consumers about a phenomenon known as greenwashing. The company is helmed by a three person team of passionate young eco-conscious advocates who want the world to understand the difference between companies that use ‘green and eco’ purely to increase sales and those who are truly making a difference. CB argues that our dollars should be voting for sustainability and ethical business practices.

Conscious Box contents

While I did love my conscious box and enjoyed everything that was inside, I doubt I would order a monthly subscription. All the products were familiar, and I didn’t see the benefit of receiving samples of familiar brands. However, I am planning on ordering several boxes as holiday presents. I think it is one of the best eco-conscious affordable gift ideas this year. You get to introduce your friends to great brands, it is already packaged and wrapped, and it is guaranteed to be unique!

Have you tried Conscious Box? What do you think about it? Please share in the comments section! We love to hear your thoughts!

Editor’s Note: HUGE thanks to Conscious Box for supplying our review sample.
