Recently, I saw the movie Moneyball with Brad Pitt. The last scene is incredibly touching. Brad Pitt’s daughter in the movie sings a song that has been stuck in my head ever since.
Particularly the lyrics below:
“I’m just a little girl lost in the moment
I’m so scared but I don’t show it
I can’t figure it out, it’s bringing me down
I know I’ve got to let it go and just enjoy the show
Just enjoy the show, just enjoy the show.”
It made me think- how much do we enjoy the show?
By the show, I mean the journey of our life (which is the theme of the song too). Do you get lost in your plot line by trying to figure it all out? Or are you overwhelmed by all the twists and turns of life or the uncertainty of your ending?
We are a part of the greatest show on earth. And we all have tickets to experience it.
Some people are satisfied with the “nose bleed seats.” Others leave the show to check their messages, make calls or take care of an endless list of other distractions. Many people aren’t satisfied and want their money back. They want a refund on their life because they feel like they’ve been cheated. Then there are those who not only get front row seats, they get pulled up on stage. They are experiencing the show to the fullest. We all have free tickets to the show, but their tickets become priceless.
I have been content to watch from all of these angles at different points in my life. It wasn’t until I began living in the moment that I actually began to enjoy the show. It was then I became invested and engaged during the entire story- not just the ending. I used to always be looking for the “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” and all I focused on was the fact I hadn’t found it yet.
Yes, by all means we should have goals and dreams. Absolutely. But when we become so focused on hitting the target, we can forget to appreciate the journey of perfecting our aim. When we see all that is wrong with our life our ticket becomes trash. But when we see possibilities and opportunities, our ticket becomes golden.
When we take in the show moment by moment is when we surrender to let life unfold. It is then we can be grateful for where we are right now and realize it is all part of a bigger picture.
You have the ticket in your hands. Are you going to enjoy the show?
