Editor’s Corner: Modern Hippie Vice

Those of you who receive the newsletter may have noticed a new wrangler of posts riding around behind the scenes over the last few weeks. But for all those who haven’t e-met me yet: I’m Adwoa, the new managing editor here at Modern Hippie Mag.

So much of what energizes me has to do with bringing you guys the best content I possibly can. I love to share recipes, products, and conscious living tips with an amazing list of virtues to their names. But when I thought about what I wanted to share with you in my first editorial, the first thing that jumped to mind were… my own ecological or mindful living vices.

I take long showers. I’m frequently multitasking, in a rush, late, or all of the above. And although I’ve instituted a weekly Wellness Wednesday, sometimes self-care sinks to the bottom of the to-do list. (You know: the item that never quite gets crossed off as done.)

So often in conscious circles, there’s a sense of striving for blamelessness, purity – a certain perfection. But life is rarely neat or ideal – and even conforming to a triple-bottom line, green and healthy standard can still feel confining.

In the coming weeks and months, you’ll begin to hear a stronger voice from each of the amazing editors here at the mag. We’ll begin next Friday by sharing our points of view on what it means to be a modern hippie to us. Then we want to show you, week after week, the way our individual voices, perspectives – and yes, flaws – contribute to the rich and varied fabric that makes up this community, and our lives.

Meanwhile, it’s not too late for any of us. And perhaps more to the point, every moment is an opportunity to embrace ourselves and our lives: warts and all. I’m writing this in the evening on a Wednesday – there’s still just enough time in the day to turn off my laptop, plug into some silence, and reconnect with all the strange and wonderful things that make my modern existence feel so hip to be.

Adwoa

Originally from gorgeous Sarasota, Adwoa Gyimah-Brempong has recently returned (like a sea turtle) to the beaches of her birth. The Florida native has traveled widely, living most recently in New England, Portugal and Italy. A dedicated communications maven, Adwoa is a veteran of Gilt City, TimeOut Boston, and MIT. In addition to writing, editing and photography, she is a licensed massage therapist in the states of Massachusetts and (soon) Florida. Her interests range from food to fashion, music to policy – all underscored by the certainty that it’s possible to live a rich, fulfilling life while treading lightly on the earth.
