It was not up until the past several years that the term ‘going green’ became as popular as it is these days. As human resources departments implement green practices, workplaces begin to reduce their ecological footprints and provide employees with more productive places to work. For some simple ways to implement green practices within your human resource services you do not have to conduct a lot of research, simply keep reading.
Use Less Energy While Working
With so many advances in technology almost everyone uses a computer if they are employed within a human resources department. All human resources workers should optimize their energy settings on their PCs or Macs. They should also remember to completely shut down their computers at the end of the day. Unplugging computers or switching off the power strip they are plugged into also helps reduce energy consumption. Along with switching off computers, printers and other electronics should be powered down as well when leaving the office for the day.
Reduce Paper Usage by Digitizing
It is always important to keep in mind that a significant amount of paper usage can be reduced by storing paperwork in electronic form. In fact, the best way to go ‘green’ paper-wise within a human resource department is to not actually use paper, but to store paperwork in digital form. One of the easiest forms of digital storage methods is utilizing email features.
Purchase PCR Paper
Going completely paperless within a human resource department is practically impossible. So, when purchasing paper all human resource departments should remember to buy PCR paper. PCR paper is paper that is made of post-consumer recycled content; this type of paper has the minimum amount of chlorine bleaching in it. Remembering to flip paper over and print on both sides also helps reduce paper usage in offices. In fact, many printing machines are accompanied with features that flip the paper over themselves, making printing on both sides just about as easy as it gets.
Telecommute as Much as Possible
Many employers these days are making telecommuting a very viable option for employees. Telecommuting allows workers to complete a large portion of their work at home, which enables a reduction in fuel consumption to be endured by the workers. In fact, meetings, teleconferences and much more can be completed within the comfort of the workers’ homes. As employees are enabled to work from home they are also allotted more time to work because they don’t have to spend the time it takes to get to and from work, which for many are several hours a day.
