eco-fashion right NOW!

New York is nurturing a new breed of eco-fashion designers, right NOW.  Trying to push into the design world is no easy task, especially when you are yet to have street cred designing and then selling against an American cultural psychology of trusting only a BIG brand name.

NOW showcase 2011Introducing the NOW showcase (www.nowshowcase.com)  2011, an intimate group of fashion forward beauty, accessory and fashion brands connecting their design sense with sustainable materials and environmentally conscious practices.  This was their 6th semi-annual event in New York City that brought together buyers and designers under one conscious crib; I mean ethical trade show.   Who you may know in the NOW showcase is Gretchen Jones, winner of project runway season eight (I’m just getting all the past season via Netflix!) oh, and writer of a new column (My Designer Life ) on Eco Salon.

Since I could not be there in person, only inter-person, I want to highlight some designs I find eco-fab. Tell me that your very next fashion purchase cannot be sustainable and I will show you 20 designers who will tell you no lies.

Here is an outfit I imagine I would love from these designers:

NatureVsFuture

Top: NatureVsFuture geometric shaped top. Sculptural design with sustainable fabric, just superb.

Adie+George

Skirt: Adie+George natural dyed skirt. They use nature’s gifts like avocado’s and lemons to dye their clothes.

Accents: Andy Lifschutz custom hand carved, reclaimed silver pyrite stone ring. Pyrite is known as Fool’s Gold, offering protection and intellect. I hunted for Fool’s Gold growing up in the forests of Washington State, so this is a memory ring for me. Andy I will take a size 7 please!

Accents: Heidi Roland feather earrings made of 2″ hand carved leather. Saffron yellow, my fav.

Olsen-Haus

Shoes: Olsen Haus, pure vegan heels.

Titania-Inglis

Jacket: Titania Inglis, a sustainable heringbone jacket to throw over my complete look. Made in New York of organic and deadstock fabric. Nice classic cut.

Other fab eco-designers at the NOW Showcase:

Adie & George, A.D.O., Andy Lifschutz, Chemline, Creem, Deborah Lindquist, EcoSkin, G=9.8, Heidi Roland, Joann Berman, Juleselin, Kelly Lane, Lipstock, NatureVs.Future, Olsen Haus, RICA Bath and Body, SDN, Sohom Dave, Titania Inglis, Tkahres Jewelry
