Discovering Unique and Emerging Ethical Fashion Labels in Las Vegas

Being a writer in the fashion industry has its perks. Namely, receiving invitations to exciting events around the country that otherwise would never have come my way.

The most recent invitation was to WWD MAGIC in Las Vegas.  Magic, the largest fashion industry trade show in the world, asked me to attend and cover the event from a blogger’s point of view. And to help bring the show to people who couldn’t make it in a new, exciting, interactive, and digital way.  I accepted.

I covered a lot of territory while in Vegas, but the part that I think Modern Hippie Mag readers will be most interested in is the POOL Tradeshow. No, it’s not a display of the world’s most beautiful swimming holes. It’s a coming together of some of the best independent fashion that we style-hungry consumers can’t wait to get our hands on.

The participants came in a range of categories and styles and each harnessed their own personal and professional missions and initiatives.  A lot them stood out to me for their approach to slow and ethical design.

Now, keep in mind that I am a true believer in the phrase “to each, his (or her) own”.  Meaning, eco and green design can come in a lot of varieties.  Some folks focus on sustainable and organic fabrics, others believe in slow, handcrafted fashion, still others work towards recycled creations, philanthropic efforts, fair trade and/or vegan.  The point is, you have to decide which initiatives are most important to you because I am taking it upon myself to say that you will be hard pressed to find a fashion label that does it all.

So I’ve put together a list of 10 of the most fabulous green design that I found at Magic based on the varying practices of different designers.

Feisty Elle- handmade jewelry fashioned from bamboo and merino wool felt.

Proof- handmade wooden sunglasses; donations made to hospitals performing sight-giving surgeries in India as well as to tree planting initiatives in Haiti

Fotoula Lambros- women’s apparel made with organic and sustainable fabrics

Emily Grace Goodrich- jewelry made with fused, recycled plastic shopping bags & hand stitched to wire.

Mei Vintage- handbags created using remnant leather, hemp lining, and vintage silk kimonos

Adina Mills Design House- jewelry made with natural crystallized rock

One Language- natural canvas tote line owned and operated by local NYC sister team

Badcock Apparel – cheeky apparel made in the USA.

Ryn Rina- accessories made with recycled materials and eco-friendly fabrics

Aittia- silk printed scarves made in the USA.

Happy Shopping!
