Book Review: Spit That Out!

My two boys have just turned 8 and 11 years old and I think back to when I was pregnant and just getting started as a mom.  With a full time job in the mix too, I realize now how unaware I was of so many things.  Blogs, just like this interest in the green movement, was in its infancy too so no wonder!   Today I would definitely tackle many things in a different way and with a book like Spit That Out: The Overly Informed Parent’s Guide to Raising Children in the Age of Environmental Guilt (whew!) by Paige Wolf, helps make navigating the world of green as a new and in many cases neurotic mother much easier.

Paige’s quirky and funny book takes on just about every issue a new mother faces from what to do with those non-organic clothing gifts, breastfeeding versus formula  to everyday food choices with quotes  like “Organic is the biggest buzz word since Happy Meal”.   She also ponders if letting our children play with knives is safer that letting them play with those plastic toys!  And of course much is said about the great diaper debate as well as the costs of green living and finally the guilt associated if we just can’t seem to do everything in an organic and eco-friendly fashion.

With “Dollar Savvy Sustainability Tips” and “Green Mom Sanity Tips” at the end of various chapters, this book can serve to be a quick go to resource should you find yourself in an eco-mom dilemma.   Plus with quotes by real moms sprinkled throughout helps gives a healthy dose of reality too.  An easy to read, entertaining book to help any mom, first-time or otherwise, anxious or not, know “what to expect” when raising kids green.

The book is available now and in partnership with Eco-Libris, one tree will be planted for every printed copy sold.
