The Tyranny of Oil

Though the oil spill in the Gulf seems to have been brought to an end, ire over the oil industry still remains in the hearts of many just as oil still lurks throughout our waters. Shortly after the spill first happened, I had the privilege of reading Antonia Juhasz‘s book The Tyranny of Oil: the World’s Most Powerful Industry, and What We Must Do To Stop It. The book is a hard hitting expose of the oil industry, blending the history of its expansion over the last century, incredible investigative reporting, and real world policy solutions. It is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the peril which confronts us and how we can move on from here. As I told Antonia, it may be one of the most dangerous books I’ve ever read. After reading only the first chapter of the almost 500 page tome, I wanted to bludgeon someone with it.

Antonia is Director and Founder of the Energy Program at Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights non-profit organization. The Tyranny of Oil serves as a follow up, of sorts to her acclaimed book The Bu$h Agenda: Invading the World, One Economy at a Time (HarperCollins 2006). “The Bu$h Agenda exposes the Bush administration’s use of corporate globalization policy as a weapon of war. Juhasz uncovers the history and key role of U.S. corporations in the creation of the Bush agenda, focusing on Bechtel, Lockheed Martin, Chevron, and Halliburton. Presenting the Iraq War as the most brutal application of the Bush agenda, Juhasz reveals the “oil time-line” driving the war, and the costs and consequences of the administration’s attempt to fundamentally transform Iraq’s economy. Juhasz concludes with specific achievable alternatives for a more peaceful and sustainable course.”

Have you ever been fooled by images that look real but are actually Photoshopped? You need some Image Analysis software to help you detect them. But such kind of software is usually pretty expensive. Instead, some online fake detection tool can help on this for free. Like Photoshopped Image Killer. PSKiller extracts JPEG quantization tables from your image and compares them with those in database. If they match tables of Photoshop, image will be classifier as Photoshopped. Exif tags of JPEG are utilized as well.
