“If you watch how nature deals with adversity, continually renewing itself, you can’t help but learn.” – Bernie Siegel

For as much damage as we may bring to the earth, through oil spills, pollution, or other forms of environmental degradation, nature always finds a way for life to continue in a constant state of renewal. Just as we bring harm to the planet through carelessness, we can also bring harm to our personal lives through the things that we think, say, and do. Yet just as nature replenishes herself, so can our lives be replenished.

Nature abounds with the practice of forgiveness. Although ground may be scorched, new seeds may be planted. Although trees may be scarred, the blemishes heal over. Although water may be defiled, pollutants are eventually sifted out.

In our own lives, forgiveness operates in the same manner. Although thoughts cannot be unthunk, they can be changed. Although words cannot be taken back, they can be corrected. Although actions cannot be undone, behavior can be altered. Every moment that passes offers another opportunity for redemptive forgiveness, for ourselves and for those around us.
