“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.” – Joseph Campbell
We are very much a career minded society. It seems that so much of our energy goes toward making strides in our business acumen, achieving a sense of purpose, and fiduciary gain. Yet the gurus, shamans, and teachers that have sought to bring wisdom into our lives since the dawn of time have all given us insight into the importance of taking time to smell the flowers.
Though there is much satisfaction in what we do and what we offer the world, let us not get too caught up in the idea that life should be entirely comprised of work. Often our purpose is not to manipulate the world around us in order to create a product or provide a service, but only to appreciate the world as it is. Make sure to take time in appreciation of simply being as much as you are of doing.
