“Sustainable Development is… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs…” – from the World Commission On Environment and Development’s report, Our Common Future (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1987)
Whether we realize it or not, everything that we do has an effect on the generations that follow after us. The systems we put in place, the practices we develop, the habits we cultivate… they will all help create what kind of future we pass on to our children and grandchildren. We are at a pivotal time in human history where we have the choice to start making better decisions on how we grow our food, how we harness and spend our energy, and how we treat our fellow man. Should we choose to seize this opportunity, we can plant seeds for a flourishing and sustainable future. If we decide to do nothing, the decision will eventually be made for us as well as for the generations that follow. Let’s start thinking sustainably today so our children can live sustainably tomorrow.
