The word family, like the word marriage, has become open to numerous interpretations. To some it brings to mind the nuclear family with mom, dad, and 2.5 kids. Some consider the numerous extensions of people who are related by blood. Some think of a group dedicated to care for one another by choice. And of course, some think of organized crime.
However, however family is ultimately defined, it serves a unit which always brings its members a balanced portion of encouragement, humility, belonging, and independence. In each of our families, we find ourselves amidst a group of people who will care for us when the rest of the world turns away and give us a kick in the butt when we need to face the world again. We find people with incredible similarities that draw us together and astounding individuality that helps to create the wonderful mosaic, bringing color to our lives.
Let us not ever underestimate or undervalue the role that our families play in our lives. Our role in them helps to define who we are today and create who we will be tomorrow.
