“The paradox of education is precisely this; that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.” – James Baldwin
Over the last decade or so, there has been a growing movement, especially among the “hippie” types, toward a trend known as de-schooling. After generations of children being lined up in a classroom like rows of corn, some are starting to doubt whether our educational system offers the optimal learning conditions. Furthermore, many doubt whether the tenets our society so dearly adheres to and teach in our schools offer the optimal living conditions. Though some say they learned everything they need to know in kindergarten, others have concluded that they’ve received some bad lessons.
What bad lessons did you learn when you were growing up that you had to unlearn as an adult? What lessons do we need to be teaching to the next generation and what are the best ways to teach them?
