Over the last several years there has been a huge shift to the use of mineral make up. Having made the switch about seven years ago, I can’t imagine going back to a liquid foundation.
A quick review of the benefits of a mineral based cosmetic:
- It feels great. Light and airy allowing your skin to breathe.
- It blends in much nicer than a liquid eliminating that makeup line around the face.
- It doesn’t smudge or leave a trail behind on your clothes (or anyone else’s).
- Because it’s mineral based, ingredients like alcohol, dyes, perfumes, talc, preservatives are eliminated.
- It can actually help your skin look better because it is not clogging up your pores.
While I have tried many good brands in the past, I recently connected with a new company, Modern Minerals. Founder Diane Read was kind enough to send me a few samples so it was nice to learn and experience her product first hand. There were up front reasons why I was willing to try out Modern Minerals. All products are produced without any chemical preservatives and fillers and with real ingredients that are sourced from the earth. Below is a list of ingredients they avoid:
- Artificial Colors: Also known as aluminum lakes or dyes and can be recognized by letters FD&C.
- Artificial Fragrances: Some of the chemicals used to create synthetic fragrances are derived from petrol products. Phthalates have been found in some synthetic fragrances. Studies have linked phthalates to possible developmental & reproductive issues as well as asthma, liver and kidney issues. Phthalates, DBP, BBP, DEHP are now banned in Europe.
- Bismuth Oxychloride & Cornstarch: Can irritate skin, clog pores and show fine lines.
- Micronized Minerals & Nanoparticles: These smaller particles present a greater likelihood of inhalation for those concerned about respiratory issues.
- Synthetic Parabens: (Methyl, Propyl, Ethyl, Butyl): Often used as to extend the shelf life in cosmetics. Studies have linked parabens to health concerns.
- Petroleum Products & By-products: We prefer to omit them entirely and use natural ingredients that truly hydrate.
Now that’s all fine but how does it perform? In order to give any loose mineral based makeup a real chance, you need to use a good brush. I found MM applied very nicely and with a soft glow that gives my skin an even healthier look. With a strong range of base shades and an earthy and elegant eyeshadow palate to choose from with yummy names like Godiva, Tiramisu, Haiku and Storm, Modern Minerals performs as well, if not better, than other brands I’ve used. I personally prefer a pressed version so was also glad to hear that they are introducing that option as well.
In terms of packaging, glass is preferred for their liquid based body products and the plastic containers for the make up is recyclable. And the price is very competitive with eye shadows at only $10.

I have been using mineral Makeup for only about a year. I agree that it is so light and it does not clog the pores. I am due for a makeover, because I don't usually wear eye shadow, but would love to try the different colors. I do use mineral foundation and blush. LOve it. Am glad my wife found Modern Mineral makeup. It enhances her natural beauty without looking like "make-up". From one man's perspective, natural is better, it blends in with her skin tone.
got my order first from this company. its the first mineral make up i've used EVER. tried minerals because i eat organic and want to live a healthy lifestyle. i was sorta intimidated to use loose powders, but so far really happy with it. it was totally easy to use and i love the colors and also that thye blend smooth and easy. i shake a little in the cap and swirled my brush around to pick up the powder. the intensity of the colors are great so i didnt need too much. its a good deal for pure makeup.
i’ve tried other mineral foundations, but not this brand. I liked the the smooth finish they give my complexion without looking “made up.”
I would like to try the products. I hear good comments from those who have tried it.

I have only tried a few mineral make-up items. They are usually so expensive! I would love to try more, though, since I do like them a lot!
I have been using a mineral foundation powder. It seems okay as a face powder but is definitely lacking in covering blimishes, spots, etc.

I do not personally use any make up, but my niece has reached an age where she has started using it. If she is going to use make-up I would prefer for her to start off with pure, eco and health friendly, non-animal tested products. I also think a natural non-plastered look would quite suit her (and arguably everyone who wears make-up.) I am hoping that if I she starts of with more eco-friendly, quality make-ups, then that will become something that she will stay with. Being her favorite aunt, I still have some influence here and there in choices she makes.

i have had GREAT and not so great experiences with mineral makeup. Some brands are super high pigmented and dont make my eyes turn red.others not so much. i love the range of colors and how smooth it goes on.

I visited Modern Minerals. I have had a wonderful experience with mineral makeup. I have found that there are many wonderful eyeshadows and blushes on the mineral market. Some eyeshadow I have are comparable to MAC, in my opinion.

I love mineral eyeshadow. I use it with Urban Decay eyeshadow primer and it last really well.
