Transitioning to a World Without Oil

With the common sense knowledge that the oil we so take for granted today will one day run out, a new movement has been forming to start finding ways to transition out of our dependence on oil. Not just foreign oil, but oil altogether. Seeking renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, fewer cars on the road, and healthier lives, the Transition movement is starting at the grassroots level in towns and cities all over the world.

“The Transition movement is about communities around the world responding to peak oil and climate change with creativity, imagination and humour, and setting about rebuilding their local economies and communities.”

As founder Rob Hopkins puts it, the end of the Oil Age is seen by many “as the Great Opportunity, the chance to build the world they always dreamt of.” Because of this, he has devised the “‘Energy Descent Action Planning (EDAP)’, which works with a community to vision how they see their town 20 years in the future, in a positive way, and then backcast from then to now.”

I learned about the Transition movement through one of the talks on TED (which we will hopefully be sharing more frequently here in the future), but they have also created a documentary called In Transition 1.0. We are including them both here for you. Enjoy and imagine a great future!
