The Farm Experience Weekend

Ever wonder what it’s like to live in a real hippie commune? Next weekend, you might just get your chance. The Farm Community in Middleton, Tennessee is having their second Farm Experience Weekend of the Spring from April 23 – 26.

Established on 1050 acres in 1971 by a caravan of dreamers from San Francisco, the Farm Community now has 4000 contiguous acres upon which approximately 200 residents share the land with all sorts of wildlife. Supporting themselves through a number of non-profit and for-profit businesses, the members of the Farm Community have come a long way to become one of the most successful and longest lasting intentional communities in the United States.

With a number of eclectic places to stay ranging from the onsite campground to rooms in some of the members’ homes, the Farm Experience Weekend offers you five home-cooked vegetarian meals, the history of the community, yoga, meditation, communion with nature, a fireside drum circle, great fellowship, and a variety of workshops including vegetarian cooking, midwifery, straw bale homes, home based business, and community & global sustainability. You’ll also learn what it means to live in an ecovillage. Even if you decide not to join the community, you will still bring home a lot of great ideas on how to grow your own food, implement solar power, and be more sustainable in your daily life.

Although the Farm Experience Weekend only takes place twice a year, they do offer a number of other events and are always welcoming of visitors as long as advance notice is given. The cost for the weekend is only $200 per adult (with lower prices for students and kids) or $500 for the entire family. To register for the weekend or to arrange a visit later in the year, go visit the Farm Community website now.
