In the midst of two wars and such a divided populace over the radical idea of health care reform, it is sometimes hard to be optimistic about the guiding spiritual principles of our country. Though highly religious folk have been decrying the moral state of our society for decades, we still seem entirely predisposed to an unflinching zeal for war and a misplaced devotion to profit and creature comforts over compassion and basic care for our fellow man. Nevertheless, though the highest aspirations of our principles have not quite translated to politics yet, we can still find hope in the unyielding freedom to show love to our neighbors and practice a life of nonviolence and community in our everyday practice.
