This season I was able to attend my first fashion week at Bryant Park and noticed that the event was very eco-aware.
Sponsor Mercedes Benz took this season a step closer to being green by becoming completely carbon neutral. This means they purchased enough carbon offsets to have net zero carbon emissions (the determined footprint was 948 tons of carbon dioxide emission). This helped counterbalance the large heated tents used for most of the shows.
O.N.E. Natural Experience was the official beverage sponsor which served water in Tetra Pak paper cartons. Attending the shows, I was also very aware that recycling was of strong importance for the event and Mercedes Benz made it convenient, placing recycle bins within all the tents for disposal.
Bryant Park wasn’t the only ones presenting Fall 2010 collections last week. The GreenShows also presented their Eco Fashion Week in Manhattan. There were a total of 10 collections shown over 4 days. Gary Harvey was one of the more prominent designers whose collection included recycled laundry bags and newspaper pages from the Financial Times. House of Organic/Ekovaruhuset also presented an organic line with all natural dyes that is extremely wearable. The House of Organic line brought talents from all over the world; including Canada, Japan and Sweden to create their collection.
This year’s fashion week proved to be very exciting and surprisingly very eco. I can’t wait until next year!
