I have received comments from readers, family, and friends congratulating me on a successful blog design. Though I am talented in many different areas, web and graphic design is SO not among them. I’m learning as I go. Outside of the actual site design, which of course is a WordPress theme designed by bovatasan, there are also many applications that work behind the scenes. These applications were designed by mad gifted computer geniuses of the World Wide Web. It is with the help of their talent and generosity that Modern Hippie Mag is visually appealing and runs smoothly.
Though I am currently not in a position to compensate the many tech peeps who have designed the applications and plug-ins that I use on the site, I’d like to give them some props in gratitude for their work.
Don’t even think about asking me how any of them work. If you have questions, please go to the source.
1. Add to Any
Add to Any helps readers share, bookmark, and email posts and pages using a variety of services including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and others. Sharing made easy!
2. All in one SEO pack
All in one SEO pack by Michael Torbert, Optimizes your WordPress blog for Search Engines. There’s also a Pro version. I know SEO is important. That’s all I have to say about that.
3. Datafeedr Random Ads V2
The Datafeedr Random Ads plugin allows you to simply and easily show random ads anywhere in your template files or using widgets. It is the coolest and easiest plugin to manage your ads.
4. Do Follow
The Do Follow plugin by Denis de Bernardy, removes the evil nofollow attribute that WordPress adds in comments. The nofollow attribute is bad blog mojo, don’t do that, it’s not nice.
5. Fast and Secure Contact Form
Fast and Secure Contact Form for WordPress by Mike Challis is a simple contact form that lets your visitors send you a quick E-mail message. It blocks all common spammer tactics thereby ensuring that spam is not a problem. Includes a CAPTCHA and Akismet support. Does not require JavaScript. Since using this plugin I have not had one single spammer come via the contact form!
6. Google XML Sitemaps
The Google XML Sitemaps plugin by Arne Brachhold will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com to better index your blog. Uh, sure okay…we’ll do that.
7. Graphical Statistics Report
Designed by Gopi R, this plug-in will display the graphical report for monthly user registration, monthly post summary, monthly comments posted summary and category wise post summary. Helps keep the data nice and tidy.
8. IntenseDebate
IntenseDebate Comments enhance and encourage conversation on your blog or website. Full comment and account data sync between IntenseDebate and WordPress. Custom integration with your WordPress admin panel makes moderation a piece of cake. Enriches the conversation and gives readers more options to participate, undt ya!
9. LinkWithin
LinkWithin is a great plugin designed to display recommended stories and associated thumbnails from your blog into single posts. Their customer service is stellar, unfortunately I am no longer using this plugin but I HIGHLY recommend it!
10. List Authors
The List Authors plugin by Matthew Toso adds a widget to display a list of site authors. It can be configured to include post counts and links to author RSS feeds. It’s so y’all know who the team is on the homepage.
Wow! This list is longer than I thought…
11. Subscription Options
The Subscription Options plugin designed by Tom Saunter adds subscription option icons for your RSS Feed, FeedBurner Email Service, Twitter Stream, and Facebook page. Includes 12 customizable color options and is totally user-friendly. Tom is a ROCKSTAR of a guy, his blog is one to tune into!
12. TweetMeme Retweet Button
Most everyone is familiar with the TweetMeme Retweet plugin because it adds a button which easily lets you retweet blog posts. I love it when you retweet. Tickles me every time!
13. Ultimate Google Analytics
The Ultimate Google Analytics plugin by Wilfred van der Deijlon has options to track external links, mailto links, and links to downloads on your own site. Another fine way to keep track of stats.
14. Vimeo Sidebar Widget
Kudos to Denzel Chia for developing a simple sidebar widget that allows for displaying vimeo video.
15. WP-SpamFree
WP-SpamFree is an anti-spam plugin by Scott Allen that virtually eliminates comment spam. A great compliment to the secure contact form.
16. WPtouch iPhone Theme
Because Steve suggested I add it to make reading Modern Hippie Mag iPhone friendly, the WPtouch iPhone Theme plugin by Dale Mugford & Duane Storey (BraveNewCode) formats your site with a mobile theme for the Apple iPhone/iPod touch, Google Android and other touch-based smartphones.
17. Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
YARPP by mitcho (Michael Yoshitaka Erlewine) returns a list of related entries based on a unique algorithm for display on your blog and RSS feeds. A cool tactic to keep you wanting more!
I don’t fully understand how many of these applications work, but through trial and error I have found a system that works for what I want to accomplish which is to provide an online source for hip, healthy conscious living and environmental sustainability that is easy to navigate and easy on the eyes.
Do you have experience with any of these plugins?

Wow Jaszy-thank you so much for sharing all your valuable knowledge. Just the fact that you've learned how to use and incorporate all those tech thingys blows me away. You rock!
Thanks Shayna! I don't know how I know what I know or exactly what it is that I know…really. Let's just say that Google is my friend!
Hi Jaszy,
Thanks for the compliments.
And thank you for using my plugin!
Feels good to be one of the "mad gifted computer geniuses of the World Wide Web"!
Regards,
Denzel Chia
I've got to disagree with you there Jaszy. The only rockstar around here is you.
Really appreciate the credit, and thanks too for including me amongst such other great plugins.
For those who want to take this further, here's a list of the plugins I myself use: http://bit.ly/9slEHj

Awe, thanks Tom! It takes a rock star to know a rock star!
Just wanted to give you a shout from the valley of the sun, great information. Much appreciated.
Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
