“Every generation needs a new revolution.” - Thomas Jefferson
If George Washington is the father of our country, Thomas Jefferson is surely the really cool uncle. Whereas a father might hold a particular goal in mind for his child, one thing that he wants him to become like a doctor or a lawyer, an uncle gives him a much wider berth in defining himself. As integral as Jefferson was to the birth of this nation, he also understood that it was bound to be a constant revolution.
One of the worst dangers that America faces is stagnancy. We have developed this wonderful constitution, created a working free market, and developed a myriad of technologies. However, amidst all of the progress we have seen, there exists the potential to sit back on our laurels and conclude that the status quo is surely good enough.
Yet just as the rebels of old fought the status quo to create this country, we now have a new generation of rebels who will create it anew. The America of today is not the same as the thirteen colonies which began it. Nor is it the same as the fifty states that comprised it only a decade ago. Revolution is a constant, for our planet and for our country. May we go with the flow of the revolution and embrace the changes it brings.
