We know Aveda for their plant-derived hair care, skin care and makeup, but they’ve also gotten a little sweeter with their “green” backstage program created to help keep the fashionistas cool and sustainable with Ice Cream for the Earth and EarthLust.
Aveda has engaged a Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream truck, a New York City sidewalk staple and summer favorite, to supply ice cream cones outside each of its five shows. The tasty cones regularly priced at $3.95, will be offered for $1 with proceeds benefiting the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
Made with organic and locally-sourced ingredients, Van Leeuwen concocts their ice cream’s custard base using three ingredients: fresh, hormone free milk/cream from local farmers in Lewis County New York, egg yolks, and pure cane sugar…yummy!
Also pretty cool is Aveda’s continued efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their shows by providing reusable, EarthLust bottles to quench backstage thirsts. Since its inception in 2008, Aveda’s efforts have eliminated the use of approximately 5,100 plastic water bottles. They estimate this season’s shows will bring the total to more than 6,500 thereby helping to prevent almost 7,000 plastic water bottles from ending up in already overflowing landfills.
EarthLust bottles are hand made from high quality food grade stainless steel, which is naturally safe unlined, with BPA-free safe polypropelene caps.
As if that wasn’t sweet enough, Aveda will serve organic locally sourced goodies to all backstage personnel!
Also not to be overlooked is Aveda’s decision to eliminate all fur in their shows and print show materials on post-consumer recycled paper.
Aveda continues to be a leader with over 30 years of creating botanically based products that combine science with nature.
Don’t miss the action! Get backstage access and a first look at Spring/Summer 2010′s hottest looks by visiting Aveda on Facebook, Twitter (to follow your favorite Aveda stylist, please visit Facebook.com/Aveda and click on the Twitter widget) and YouTube where you’ll find:

Now , if only we could get some of that ice cream to go…
